Play is a child’s first language and their most natural form of communication. The use of play in therapy allows a child to express their inner world, and provides a medium for myself as the therapist to interpret and communicate with them. Play also provides emotional distance from distressing topics, and builds a safe and enjoyable therapeutic relationship.
Child therapy sessions may also utilize expressive arts, puppetry, sandtray, therapeutic storytelling and games.
Symptoms of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem often emerge during adolescence and early adulthood. Therapy can help young people to overcome emotional, behavioural, school and relationship problems and realize their full potential.
My approach is client-led and collaborative. Sessions may utilize approaches from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Mindfulness, and Expressive Arts.
When a child is struggling, everyone in the family is affected.
Research shows that strong family bonds are the greatest predictors of a child's ability to be resilient after a stressful event. As the most important person in your child's life, parents are invited to be involved in their child's therapy as much as possible.
Sessions may utilize approaches from Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Child-Focused Family Play Therapy, and Theraplay®.
I am happy to offer a complimentary 15-minute exploration telephone call to help determine that I am the right fit for you and your family's needs. Booking this call prior to your first intake session is required.
For children under 12 years of age, we begin with a 90-min parent-only intake session to establish goals, gather background history, collaborate on the therapeutic process, and answer questions.
In cases of shared custody, consent from both parents is required for children under 12 years of age to participate in counselling.
For clients over 12 years of age, we begin with a 50-min intake session to build rapport, establish goals, and complete initial assessment activities. Parents/caregivers are welcome to attend the intake session for clients over 12 years of age, but not required.
Each ongoing session is anchored with your established goals in mind, while also holding space for adaptation to the unique needs of each child, youth and family. Both in-person and virtual sessions are available.
Services performed by a Registered Social Worker (RSW) are covered by most extended health benefit plans. It is important to check with your health insurance provider to find out what kinds of service your plan covers, as every plan is different for each individual and family.
